Joey , don't forget with PII it is not just the large and cumbersome package , but also that more expensive M'board .
In order to really pull the carpet from AMD , Intel has to have a cpu with that cheap socket 7 interface which is superior in design and speed . AMD is soon to release a 266mhz and a 300 mhz K6 according to what I have read . They can now play the same game as Intel , as the the price of one drops it is replaced by the higher speed part thus maintaining the blended ASP at a very profitable level . This is further boosted in '98 by the K6-3D and later the K6+ 3D enabling AMD to maintain the ASP . A point also worth considering is that due to K6s small size on .25 their production cost is low , under $30 according to analysts .
If AMD can produce a cpu in volume (even a $100 ASP cpu) they could be extremely profitable . I am looking forward until later in '98 when they will be producing 5M+ K6s in a quarter , that will really boost sales and earnings .
