John, I don't think your off base at all. It looks to me like a case similar to the PC/TV integration where Intel is hedging it's bets and attempting to become a player in both worlds. I view the SAP venture as being much more proprietary in nature, whereas the other players such as USWEB are part of the open Internet/Intranet arena. (I could be wrong though)

The buying of USWEB may be their only foray into this segment, but I thought it deserved a closer look.

An interesting thing I discovered is USWEB is actually losing allot of money now. They seem to be driven to buying up all the smaller Web page developers in the industry.

Microsoft has also attempted buying a few of the companies involved. Some have refused. It's pretty clear to me that both these companies see this segment as important for the future. The Intranet being the real driving force of growth going into the future.
