4/29/16 Contest update What were the stoners at AbbVie smoking when they agreed to pay $5.8 billion for the secretive San Francisco biotech Stemcentrx? Well, whatever the concoction in their pipe, they weren’t sharing it with other biotech investors and it was another depressing week for the sector. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -24.46% YTD (vs. down -19.02% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -20.76% YTD (vs. down -14.82% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -23.30% YTD (vs. down -17.63% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed down -4.63% YTD (vs. down -2.02% YTD a week ago). We’re back to only a single portfolio in the green, Contest leader DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 5.73% YTD. MASTER’s portfolio, down -1.92% YTD and GENE’s portfolio, down -2.97% YTD, remained in second and third place. At Friday’s close, 57 of the 58 Contest portfolios were in the red, with 20 beating the NBI and 26 still beating the SPSIBI. The 224 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -19.50% and a median YTD loss of -21.25%, with just 35 of the 224 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.) Portfolio adjustments: None. (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.) Enjoy a safe & fun weekend biotechies! Peace & good health, Bulba
