I was lucky enough to have the unique experience of being in a young state with a very small population dominated by a concentrated group of liberals. We did things in this state that were light years ahead of any of the other states and they worked. A couple of months ago I read a report that said Alaska was in better shape financially than any state in the union. We liberals did that in the 70s.

Our permanent fund: We have $60 billion in a state permanent fund that gives us revenue to spend every year on our needs, and a big check to every resident near the winter and Christmas time. About $2,000 last year. . We did that, we ad hoc Democrats in the 70s. We developed a very sophisticated social structure up here that really works well. And we did it out of nothing.

I wrote three state plans from scratch. I had a rough outline of the concepts: goals, objectives, and methodology I filled them in with ideas, set up advisory councils throughout the state so the ideas could evolve, and today those systems are working very well.

Today, our emergency medical services system is second to none in the world.

So it drives me nuts when people tell me things can't be done that I have not only seen done with my own eyes, but was personally involved as the lead investigator of more than one such plan. Imagine how daunting the politics were to try and get the state's doctors to agree on all these new rules and regulations. But we did it.

And the same with the states alcohol and drug abuse programs. I wrote that first state plan and established the first state program in the city of barrow Alaska. Today there are facilities all throughout Alaska to assist people with drug problems. It sure as heck is better than not having those programs. As tough as they are to run.

People are capable of doing great things when they set their minds to it.
