<< The Dec 26 IBD lists the number of short shares increased 421% from Nov 14 to Dec 15. >>
That may be true, but as of the end of November, there were only 21,859 shares short.

Assuming this number was relatively stable during the two weeks prior, a 421% increase of this number only makes for about 92,000 shares. Compare this to the August and Septermber numbers, which were both about 95,000.
The point I was trying to make is that if any major run-up happens on high volume, short covering probably won't be a major factor, since the total short interest could cover in less than a single session.
