Gus: This is a scary forecast from HDD supplier stand point. Do we see any sign of it yet? How can HDD makers sell into a market of $500-$700 PC and make profits? Using today's model of aggressive HDD pricing in sub-$1000 PC, the HDD has to sell $70 or less in $700 PC? Using today's drive making process, a major cost cutting has to take place at heads, media. And, further integration of ICs is needed, etc.
Will this $500-$700 PCs be produced to replace a chunk of market share of higher priced units? Or, will they come about because the 40% of the US population that never owns a PC will come in to buy these?
I still remember that Michael Dell said that there is no market share (PC) to lose to network computer. How are Sun's or Oracles's network computer doing? I have not heard anybody buying these things. At least, I am not interested. Why will anyone be interested in relying software, application program that he has to "rent" from some server?
