Well, Rod, you see it is like this. If you have a lock on the door, and 50 keys on your ring, you must identify the correct key before you can unlock the door. If all the keys have serial numbers, you can match the key to the door, or you can try each one until you get a match. I am glad that C++ uses the first method and not the later. You must know that the overhead of runtime binding via the vtable is more that a simple array index. I will concede that the 10% figure is old, and I am sure that number has been improved. But overhead is overhead.
