Really strong Rossby waves are present right now. Rossby waves account for the large variations in temperatures, especially around the United States. Similar story in Greenland and western Europe. The gradients between these Rossby waves harbor a lot of potential energy to develop strong synoptic storms.

Weather is indicative of change, and the rapid global cooling going after a peaking El Nino harbors the potential for big weather on small and large scales. It's like squeezing the sponge on a global scale, and it's very healthy.
