I heard a discussion on the radio today about Trump's proposal to 'negotiate down' the national debt, if we had some sort of a financial crisis.

The economists weighing in all said that that might be the way to handle a corporate financial problems, but it would be an absolutely disastrous way to deal with an American financial crisis.

What the Donald was basically proposing is getting everyone that holds US bonds to take a haircut. US bonds are the foundation of the global financial system, owned by almost every country on Earth, save maybe N. Korea and maybe Cuba. Trump would be violating the 'full faith and credit of the Untied States', and would cause a worldwide financial panic.
