Thanks. It shed more light on the operators and vendors games
  • Spectrum ownership

  • Control of the way industry evolves.

  • Regulators side with operators and vendors
Device suppliers, including Apple, Samsung, and OS suppliers Apple and Google/Android, would have no market to sell into if operators had not anticipated and spent to deploy the networks in the first place.

ELMAT: They bought spectrum and upgraded to 3G having in mind the old device makers: Sony Ericsson Nokia Alcatel Get 3G and customers will surf the Internet using their mobile phones. And anticipated more capacity required and 4G-LTE would continue bring the revenues

Out of nowhere came Smartphone makers that displaced the old mobile phones and OTT and used the infrastructure as a parasite. And mobile payments, advertising and mobile money took off.

Operators and vendors saw that 4G-LTE would not cut and got scared of the amount of money Google, Facebook and Amazon are putting into infrastructure and saw the prospects of being relegated to dumb pipes only.

Now they are developing 5G and 5G is defensive, a desperate act to keep control of the industry.

Will the market hibernate waiting for 5G in 5 years or it will implement different approaches for IoT say using Wi-Fi? Will Google and Facebook take IoT markets from mobile operators with ISPs replacing the operators and would own the end users?
