I wonder if the writer in the "House of Cards" - Tom Yeates - doesn't have some of the characteristics of Ben Rhodes. (Minus the affair with Claire Underwood.). Like Rhodes, he achieved a certain "mind meld" with his boss. Rhodes (like Yeates) can formulate what Obama thinks (or what he "would" think) better than Obama can. Except that Rhodes has a far greater mission - not just to support Obama, but to create, in real time, the entire "thriller" of his Presidency.

Maybe that's the reason he granted Samuels that interview - because after Obama is out of office, few people would care about his incredible accomplishment - which was to write a real life novel of 8 years of American history.

Combine this with the unprecedented influence that the White House has over the media these days... and it's crazy.
