Qualcomm is selling wireless modems, names are QCM-800 and QCM-1900. These are a PC board version of the QCP-820 and 1920 phones which are complete and self contained. All they need is 7.2 volts and an antenna and they can be embedded into anything. They emulate a full Hayes Modem protocol and can do either dial up line connect or packet modems for TCP/IP type stuff. If you hook them up to your PC, they look just like any other standard modem. IN mid 1998, the CDMA data basestation should come online and what you ask for should be in place with full data service available. Also note that at that time, all the Qualcomm phones can be retrofitted with a cable and software to be used as a wireless modem. This includes the Q phones, the QCP series. For today, there is CDPD modems to do this with infrastucture. But the cost per minute is too high for the "coke machine" application. CDMA cost using the same voice channels is about 10 to 20 times less. Globalstar should have the same thing available.
