1 - The changes in and levels of deficits and national debt are important, but are far from the only criteria to use when evaluating a presidency.

They are very important going forward as deficits will exceed a trillion dollars from here on out. This isn't just due to inflationary pressure: it is systemically essential to prop up the health care & social security programs.

But presidents have little control the components of the deficit, generally -- They might cut defense by 1 or 2% but that will not make a dent in it during the president's term. Health care and SS are on a trajectory that pretty much can't change.

It is the trillion dollar stimulus, the "infrastructure" legislation, etc., where a president can affect it during his term and that is probably over ten years. These coots think nothing of spending a trillion bucks anymore.

It is the reason I'm so down on the nation's prospects going forward. It is just difficult to see how anyone short of a dictator makes a dent in our fiscal problems.
