My vision of conservatism has been getting its ass kicked up and down the block for a long while. The message is a hard sell.

Conservatism says government is to provide a framework where you accept difficult obligations and with hard work and perseverance you will do well. That, incidentally will make others better off. All cumulatively, over decades and generations. The opposite promises money for nothing and poon for free -- NOW. Easy choice for those without exposure to the mavens who once informed Republican policy.

After THE ROAD TO SERFDOM, Hayek was considered a patriarch of the Party. Other hommes sérieux who examined the nature of national success, or failure, informed Republican dialogue. There was a vision where government was to provide a framework where efforts of free individuals were known as the wellspring of desirable change.

Those ideas had a partial resurgence ’80 – ’88, but were dissipated after. The effects stink and those cognizant perceive a most unpleasant result, here now and intensifying.

Trumpism represents another repudiation of first principles. The alternative is horrible, but there is the First Rule of Holes.

What to do? What to do?
