I guess different times/places and experiences... I'm 60 and a mix.. did first half of elementary school in a Chinese mission school in Montreal's Chinatown which was essentially in a slum. (Funny too but makes sense of course, Practically no one spoke Mandarin .. all Guong dong wah or Hoi san wah )... Father's side grew up there and had a biz.. Being mixed I got it from both sides.. Chinese are no less racist in my experience... but anyway.. we got a lot of chink, chinaman, ching ching and combinations there of.. Oh and I almost forgot the slant eye poses...didn't help that every neighbourhood had a Chinese laundry LOL so there were endless jokes about that too... Oriental was simply never used in a derogatory sense there.. Simple as that. And sure as hell was never in the sense of nigger.. which was also a common epithet of the time. Obviously other places must have been different since the Asian/Oriental idea is pretty widespread.. So again in my *personal* experience it seems odd to me.. and as I said.. Asian/Oriental.. both western words.. so the term Asian of course can be equally derogatory ... Maybe the Chinese (and other ethnic groups) could come up with their own word for how they'd like to be addressed.. Teen Mun or Tian Min or .. or... or ... depending on who's talking :)) Jack :))
