Justice Dept. Accuses Microsoft of Disobeying Judge's Order nytimes.com
Back to press watch time, and the Good Gray Times weighs in right on schedule.
The government noted Monday that on a page on Microsoft's Web site on Nov. 18, that the company itself said that removing Internet Explorer, or IE, was not a daunting technical challenge that would cripple recent versions of Windows -- as the company told the court earlier this month.
"IE uninstalls easily if you want," the Justice Department quotes from Microsoft's Web site; "just get rid of it."
Tee hee. As if. Through the looking glass once more.
To Microsoft's contention that even deleting 3 percent of the Explorer program would disable some Windows capabilities, the department believes those problems could be solved with some slight programming changes.
"But even if not, if the best commercial fix is this one, let the market decide," a Justice Department official said. "Why is Microsoft resisting so much?"
Well, Gene has weighed in on that one, and I'd sort of agree, a variation of Hank Stamper's "Never give an inch". The conclusion here is a little worrysome, in line with the "please don't through me in the briar patch" line that I've disagreed with before, but that's life. Couple weeks off before the fireworks begin again, meanwhile the field belongs to the spinmeisters. Will there be a succinct successor to the "Chrysler Car Radio"/"Just like Disk Defrag, or TCP/IP" lines? Stay tuned.
Cheers, Dan. |
