The ". . . phase-change memory breakthrough . . ." could be among the new technologies for non-volatile memory solutions, but even (or perhaps especially) with a company the size of IBM, it could take at least two or three years to get something into mass production. Nevertheless, one cannot assume a certain growth in demand, along with limited supply additions, will create heaven for the new WDC-SNDK merger.

I'm still cautious enough in this situation to hold my existing WDC shares obtained through the merger, but not add to them. I do expect them to appreciate to somewhere between $40 and $46 in the next six to nine months, at which point I would be inclined to write call options on at least some of the underlying shares. Specifically, once the stock has appreciated to around $40 or slightly higher, I would consider selling covered calls with a strike price ranging from $45 to $50 and expiration at least six months in advance. Why sell covered calls? That is a strategy long considered by experts with considerable experience in options to be the least risky option strategy – a strategy that has been shown to deliver a better return on investment than any other option strategy.
