For what ever reason they also seem to not work properly sometimes requiring 2 or 3 attempts before the card gets read.

I haven't had that.
My card always works the first time but it does take a while to get read.

But I often forget, swipe that card first and then the reader angrily beeps at me.
Then I insert it (wasting more time) while the people behind me shuffle impatiently, roll their eyes and toss spit balls.
Okay, people behind don't do really that, they are too busy in their own world playing on their "shmart" phones.
There was such a big deal made about these new safer cards and now that feature is makes them virtually unusable other than in traditional swipe mode. I think someone should be losing his or her job about now.
The idea and technology is not new at all - other countries have had this tech for many years and there are other card systems that use card chips and they are speedy.

ApplePay offers ease of use and speed that leaves these new chipped cards in the dust.
Except when you run out of battery.

I know it's not as much fun, nor the current trend, to praise anything Apple rather than denigrate it but ApplePay is a star from my viewpoint.
Annie, you get -10 points for no Apple negativity in your post!

I haven't seen or used Applepay but besides the possibility of battery outage, it sounds good.
