If they are losing market share or is stagnant in US or EU (are they?), then why would they think they can take the larger share in China or India?
Market share is the opiate of the masses. I don't understand any talk of market share, when the only impact it could have is when you talk of market share of app developers. Apple has that share covered.

What matters is profits, so that a company can be sustainable and continue to innovate. The bottom line is that every iDevice sold is adding to Apple's huge profits every quarter. When you have the two most populous countries in the world with middle classes that are exploding in size (a share that matters), and technical infrastructures that are just now beginning to join the 21st century, then you have an unbelievable opportunity for Apple. Market share is absolutely irrelevant in such a situation.

And Apple devices have aspects that virtually none of the competitors have. They get better with time. Their security gets updated. Their abilities are multiplied and improved. They last longer. They are an aspirational brand. Eventually in any market the customers become aware of these facts and Apple becomes the eventual go-to purchase.

So, even in markets where the original smart phone purchase is someone else, Apple should be there. Eventually they will get the people that are unsatisfied with that purchase. It's a no-lose situation.

And one final comment on market share. Android numbers include a huge number of relatively dumb devices that don't even begin to function as smart devices. Just another reason to take market share as tongue in cheek.
