They've kicked him upstairs to a job he can't screw up.
Strange attitude towards a guy who was a big part in reversing the fortunes of the company.

In the absence of Jobs and Forstall it only made sense to add someone with a design background to provide some continuity. With time, they developed talent and hired more management so he wasn't overwhelmed.

You can call what he did a "screw up", but at the time iOS was woefully behind the times, Jobs had just died, and Forstall had to go because he wouldn't participate in making the changes that needed to be made.

Beyond that, the blame should really go to the two fellers in place now, Dye and Howarth.
