December 30, 1997 (SEOUL) -- Korean companies hope
to export about 6 million mobile phone handsets in 1998, as
compared with an estimated 1 million in 1997.

Cellular and PCS services based on CDMA technology are available
mainly in Korea and the United States, and they are expected to start in Japan, China, and countries in Southeast Asia, South America, Europe and Africa in 1998, industry sources said.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said it exported about 500,000 mobile
phones in 1997 and it aims to ship 3.5 million units and related
equipment totaling 1.7 trillion won ($1.01 billion) in 1998.

The export ratio for Samsung's information & communication division
will reach about 40 percent, as compared with the current 20 percent,
the company said. It has recently doubled its staff in information-related sales in the United States, China, Brazil and Chile.

LG Information & Communication Inc., which exported 300,000
mobile phones in 1997, plans to export as many as 2 million units in
1998.

LG hopes to increase sales in China, Vietnam and Brazil.

Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., which mainly focused on the
domestic market in 1997, plans to increase its exports to 27 percent of its production. It hopes to export 400,000 units and sell 1.1 million units in the Korean market in 1998.

Other makers of telecom devices, including Daewoo Telecom and
Maxon Electronics, also plan to boost their exports in 1998.
