Re -- that implies that AMD should have the chip (266) ready around middle of Jan.

You are most likely correct in saying that AMD will want to couple the bad earnings report with good news. But it won't be the 266. The 266 wont be available for another couple of months in volume. (Lehman report says AMD has slipped by the 3 months. 266's were supposed to be available by the end of this Q). The good news most likely will be the Compaq use of AMD. Unfortunately this is well known fact, even though it hasn't been announced by either AMD or compaq.
