Western Digital HGST Touro drives ...
Hi Ron: << I only buy Touro drives, they are made by Hitachi, they are a division of WD but I was told that they are made with Hitachi components. >>
While that misinformation persists in cyberspace as way such muchmis information does you were told wrong. Although it's possible that some Hitach components may be employed in WD HGST internal or external drives Hitachi completed the divestiture of their hard drive manufacturing business to Western Digital and exited the market over 4 years ago in March 2012. The deal was struck a year earlier shortly after the Thailand flooding at about the same time Seagate acqured Samsung's electromechanical drive business. The Chinese regulators have kept WD under a tight leash subsequent to the acquisition but integration is almost complete. WD, not Hitachi, brought the Touro products and brand to market. More on that on the Western Diigital website.
>> WD acquired storage firm HGST a few years ago and although both companies are kept separate, there's a deliberate strategy to prevent products from both companies from overlapping. So WD ends up selling mostly storage solutions for the consumer, OEM and SMB markets, with HGST focusing on the B2B and enterprise side. Amongst all this is an oddity – the Touro range which comprises of desktop and mobile external hard disk drives, which is technically an HGST brand but is seen as a separate entity entirely. One of its products stands out from the market, the Touro S (otherwise known as the HTOSEA10001BHB), a 1TB 2.5-inch external hard disk drive that has a 7200RPM spinning speed. - TechRadar - <<
