The Berlin Wall was the best and best guarded I ever saw, yet escapes happened up to the time it was torn down. Beginning in 1963, I was intimately familiar with the sections of wall in the American and French sectors, and somewhat familiar with the British sector.

Some of the escapees "may have" had assistance...same is true today.

There is a book due for release after the New Year that may describe some of the how and why about that.
