Arctic ice has been anemic. It's been warming for the past 30 years. I'll contest that it's not from CO2. The recovery I expect in the Arctic the next few years will surprise many.

Anyways, the same ridge that led to the fires in northern Alberta blew sea-ice that was along the shore out to sea. It's what strong ridges of high pressure do.

At the same time, sea-ice that was already low, plummeted relative to the long-term average. After obviously peaking with the influence of El Nino, Arctic temperatures are dropping relatively fast. With the already compressed sea-ice and cooling (relative to the seasonal increase) temperatures, Arctic sea-ice actually recovered relative to the seasonal melt.

Even now, some are not expecting record low year. Interesting, eh?
