Yes, I am a full time PC industry analyist when I'm not
designing them. I get some insights that the big name analysts
don't. Unfortunately, I can't share too many specifics as
it is confidential information.

PC oversupply has always been an issue. Anybody can make a
PC... PC is only a small part of the buying decision. We
all know how succesfull the far east has been in winning
market share<gg>. 3 years ago it was Sony I think that was
going to put Dell out of business... according to analysts.
To illustrate how brilliant these analysts are, they
discounted the fact the Dell targets corporations and Sony
would be targeting consumers... about as brilliant as some
of todays doomsayers who cant tell the difference between
silicon chips and potato chips.

Pick up a computer shopper sometime and see how many no-names
are flooding the market with cheap PC alternatives. They
eventually practically wind up giving these things away. This
has been the case since I began following the industry back in
1986. It took me a long time to understand why ANYBODY would
buy a high priced PC from Dell or Compaq when they could get
basically the same hardware for a fraction of the cost.

Why do you think this is????

The plants are at 50% capacity right now. Floorspace is paid
for and costs next to nothing to keep empty. No inventory.
Workforce is adjusted dynamically thru temp agencies. These
guys make $7/hr... there is no risk in under-utilization...
except for maybe the electric bill.

Have you toured the new Austin Plant?
