Sure, nationalism is everywhere. Even in Germany, where they have worked damned hard at stamping it out ever since The Great Unpleasantness.

I wouldn't say the US is far from being ultra-nationalistic. The whole idea of American exceptionalism plays in that neighborhood a little. But there is a significant minority who take the kernel of truth in AE, that their ancestors had the get up and go to get up and go to another country and work to make their lives and their adopted country better, and twist it into to something uglier that they deserve better just because of their choice in parents.

So yeah, the country as a whole isn't ultra-nationalistic. But there are some who are. Scratch your friend John and you will see one. His view is a little narrower, though. He requires the uebermenschen to be white.
