But such a system isn't stable. Feudalism lasted as long as it did because the various fiefdoms were designed for protection. The rise of the middle class came about only because the various lords, barons and whatnot stopped waging war with each other because it became too easy to kill each other. And that was no fun. Without the wars, the peasants were able to accumulate wealth, however small, and the system fell apart.

The expectation that 7 billion people are just going to crawl off somewhere and die so the remaining few 10s of millions can enjoy their cornering of all of the wealth is not rational. Besides, technology is going to make sure that wealth concentrations don't have the power that they used to. Decentralization is a growing force, just swing by your local makerspace and see it in action. Or go by that Tech Shop in Round Rock.

Now imagine what such a facility could manufacture if needed. Dallas Makerspace, of which I am a member, has 14,000 square feet of floor space and a whole range of tools from woodworking hand tools to CNC mills. Right now Tech Shops and Maker/Hackerspaces are organized around hobbyists, but with a little organization could be flexible manufacturing centers run by individuals, no wealthy oligarchs needed. It would mean moving from an economy that is centered around mass production with no need of human input to one that is more artisan-based and more human intensive.
