WD HGST 'Touro' External Drives ...

Hi Ron: As I stated Wednesday, in a 2 week old post to you that this post is linked back to I recently realized that I had made a misstatement of fact in regard to Touro external desktops and portables that I needed to correct it. My incorrect statement is underlined and bolded in the paragraph below ...

"While that misinformation persists in cyberspace as way too much misinformation does you were told wrong. Although it's possible that some Hitachi components may be employed in WD HGST internal or external drives Hitachi completed the divestiture of their hard drive manufacturing business to Western Digital and exited the market over 4 years ago in March 2012. The deal was struck a year earlier shortly after the Thailand flooding at about the same time Seagate acquired Samsung's electromechanical drive business. The Chinese regulators have kept WD under a tight leash subsequent to the acquisition but integration is almost complete. WD, not Hitachi, brought the Touro products and brand to market. More on that on the Western Digital website."

Correction: Hitachi GST designed and brought the Touro brand and product to market in 2011. Western Digital (WD) who completed the Hitachi GST acquisition in early March 2012 did not design it or bring it to market.

Hitachi GST manufactured no Touros with 'Touro' boldly branded on the face of the drive, only 'Hitachi' was boldly face branded and immediately after WD completed the acquisition in March 2012 some Touro WIP on the dock may have delivered with Hitachi branding but packaging quickly was updated.

The Touro you displayed in your August 2014 ' The Good. The Bad - USB 3.0 Hard Drives' video in which you stated: "This is a hard drive is a hard drive manufactured by HGST, a Western Digital company, but the manufacturer is Hitachi makes this Hard drive. ... Hitachi has the lowest failure rates of all hard drives across the market. Nothing can touch 'em." Actually yourt original Touro was manufactured by WD's HGST San Jose based subsidiary acquired over one year prior to the production of the video. The components in your Touro drive were originally designed by Hitachi GST but were not provided by Hitachi after divestiture. They were manufactured by HGST or other HGST suppliers inherrited from the acquisition which the incorporated into their supply chain.

This is your original Touro as featured in your video. [The overlaid lettering in the lower left quadrant of the image of your Touro below is mine.]

The Touro hard drive on the left in the top image below was manufactured by Hitachi in 2011 or very early 2012 and the one on the right that is virtually identical to yours was manufactured by WD's HGST after the acquisition. The front and rear branding by WD's HGST subsidiary is shown in the bottom photos ...

Ron:[Edit] Rather than linking back to my post own original post to you I should have adressed this post directly to you.

Cheers, - Eric L -
