I'm not sure "access" is the main issue, though it's a contributor. I think it's the "gun culture", that guns are considered so cool, and so locked into their cultural mystique for some folks. That's just not the case in most countries.

If you really think it's a cultural American phenomena then you're saying the most libertarian country in the world is also the most homicidal. It makes sense.
