Sun perks up call centre
Sun Microsystems Canada Inc., Geopower Technologies Inc. and a host of others have teamed up to provide Canada's first post-secondary call centre training facility, and they did it for free.

While Sun has installed Java-enabled hardware at other sites in Canada, the opening of the fully functional call centre at Toronto-based Centennial College gave it an opportunity to publicly brag for the first time about an implementation of its NC technology. Sun donated two central servers, 40 JavaStations and Java-based software applications.

The Ontario government estimates there were as many as 3,000 call centres last year, employing up to 150,000 people in Ontario, and that the number of call centres is expected to grow 27 per cent this year. NC proponents have been arguing that call centres, one of the fastest growing business segments in the Canadian market, are ideal for networking computing.
