"Ditka holds some small cachet as the man who, in some fanciful theories,"
assaults innocent civilians with a gum. If you can't control your gum, you shouldn't be able to buy a gun.

Irate Mike Ditka's gum-tossing hissy fit Johnny Miller

Here's a look at the past. Items have been culled from The Chronicle's archives of 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.

Dec. 14: In a win so resounding it left Chicago coach Mike Ditka furious, the 49ers routed the Bears 41-0 at Candlestick last night. Ditka was so angry that he might be visited by the SFPD, which is investigating a fan's accusation that the Chicago coach struck her with a wad of gum. The other Bears, who came in swaggering, left quietly. After saying they wanted to see "What kind of man Jerry Rice is," Chicago was unable to stop Rice from catching eight passes and scoring three touchdowns. After the game, a 38-year-old woman accused Ditka of assaulting her with a huge wad of chewing gum. The unidentified woman, part of a crowd taunting Ditka as police escorted him out of the stadium said the missile struck her on the head. "What we have here is just basic assault and battery," said officer Richard Galliani of the SFPD. The gum was found and booked as evidence.
