Koan, there is a lot of space between being "a very thoughtful guy" and the person who has "written the history of civilization". Spengler, Hegel, Sorokin, Toynbee, just to name a few others, each wrote histories of civilization that have very different perspectives than the Durants.

And there are plenty of other thinkers who don't even believe that writing a real history of civilization is possible. Way too complex and random. The "direction" of history always looks like it is pointing at the present or some idealized version of what the person wants, but in fact, events are far more random and haphazard than that. There is no real "direction," it is all just an illusion conjured up by our very limited minds.
