7/1/16 Contest update
Given the week’s biotech rally triggered by Brexit, imagine the buying frenzy that would ensue after a Frexit, or Spexit, or even a Grexit. For those puzzled by the connection between xenophobia and biotechs, check out the number of biotech companies that have an “X” in their name. Didn’t think of that, did you?
Meanwhile, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -28.79% YTD (vs. down -30.98% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -22.38% YTD (vs. down -26.42% YTD a week ago), while the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -20.52% YTD (vs. down -26.10% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed down -2.89% YTD (vs. down -5.98% YTD a week ago).
DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 10.68% YTD, held the Contest lead, with MASTER’s portfolio, up 8.75% YTD, and DANIEL’s portfolio, down -4.86% YTD, continuing in second and third place.
At Friday’s close, 56 of the 58 Contest portfolios were still in the red, with just 16 beating the NBI and 13 beating the SPSIBI. The 223 (see below) Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -21.64% and a median YTD loss of -25.54%, with 44 of the 223 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: Just realized I’ve been tracking Essa Pharma, held in two portfolios, under both its U.S. symbol (EPIX) and its Canadian symbol (EPI.TO). The U.S. symbol, EPIX, seems to have a bit more volume although it hardly trades anywhere, so I’ll switch EPI.TO to EPIX. And, presto, we now only have 223 Contest portfolio stocks.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Have fun celebrating your Independence this weekend biotechies.
Peace & good health,
Bulba
