If it was conquered by the US it would be under American control. I would have chosen annexed because that's what Russia did, but you didn't like the term. Whatever words you want to use Russia took over foreign territory by force and then added it to their territory. It also did so after specifically promising to respect and guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity in exchange for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons.
