Everyone has their own backup plans, but most don't back up at all. I use my method and it works. I will never leave a external HDD plugged in when it not being backed up. I use to use hard drive caddies and would only turn them on when backing up and off when not in use. In 2001 I got the I love You Virus and it did major damage to my computer. I powered down and put my Drive Image boot CD in the drive, made sure the caddy was on and proceeded to restore an image of the caddy HDD and I was back to normal in 30 minutes.

If I would have had that caddy drive on when the virus hit I would have lost data on that drive as well. It held images and other files.
