Let's consider the kind of rhetoric that was in the air. Particularly from MacArthur genius grant awardee and literary darling Ta-Nehisi Coates who wrote in his celebrated bestseller, Between the World and Me, that the police officers who died on 9/11 “were not human to me. Black, white, or whatever, they were menaces of nature; they were the fire, the comet, the storm, which could — with no justification — shatter my body.” Clearly someone in Dallas agreed. Coates' hate tract filled with racist rants was not only heavily promoted by the media, but appeared on Obama's reading list.
