ACT Networks Receives $1.1 Million Order From India
CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 31, 1997--ACT Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ANET - news) today announced that it has received a purchase order for $1.1 million from India Telephone Industries.
The order is for ACT's SDM-T time division multiplexer and will be used by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) of India for its rural telephony project.
The DOT is making a significant investment to connect the large number of cities in India with populations of more than 500,000, which have intra-city telephone communications but no direct link to the national and international telephone networks.
Since 1994, DOT has been using ACT's SDM-T over SCPC satellite circuits to provide trunking between the cities' central offices and the central offices of the national PSTN. To date, over 300 cities have been connected, and this order will bring an additional 120 cities on-line. This order will be fulfilled in stages over the next six months.
''We are excited about the Indian government's commitment to rural communications,'' stated Martin Shum, Chairman, President and CEO of ACT Networks. ''The deployment of this network will enable millions of Indians to join the national and international telephone systems. ACT is very pleased to be part of this landmark project for DOT.''
