Flood of Water Expected at Rose Parade; Huge Hydration Efforts Underway to Keep Flowers, People and Animals Wet and Wonderful

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 31, 1997--While the skies over Pasadena may be clear Thursday morning, the participants in the parade -- including thousands of people and animals and millions of flowers -- are expected to be well quenched.

That's because Sparkletts Drinking Water, the official water sponsor of the parade, is trucking in thousands of gallons of water Wednesday in order to keep everyone happy and hydrated. Television commentators who will bring the parade to a global television audience also will keep their whistles whetted through special Sparkletts care packages being delivered to media outlets Wednesday.

Why all the water? "People forget that even in winter they need to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. And, for the band members, actors and others in the parade wearing heavy costumes and uniforms, it's even more important to drink that water before they march down Colorado Boulevard," said Charles Norris, president of Pasadena-based McKesson Water Products Co., which markets Sparkletts Drinking Water.

Although this is the second year Sparkletts has been the official water sponsor of the Rose Bowl Parade, this is the first year Sparkletts will have its own entry in the parade.

Two huge flowered hippos named Bertha and Carmen (and built by Sparkletts employees, volunteers and friends) will be running their way down Colorado Boulevard Thursday! Sponsored by Sparkletts Drinking Water, the float sports a "parlor games" theme, and features the hippos playing a hand of Old Maid while enjoying their afternoon tea.

Lots of volunteer hours and very visual feats of engineering have gone into constructing the float, and b-roll and photos are available. Starting Wednesday through Wednesday evening, roses, carnations, irises, orchids and other exotic blooms will be placed in more than 15,000 vials of Sparkletts water to ensure their freshness.

Media is encouraged to visit the float construction site to view this activity Wednesday at 120 Aspan Ave., Azusa. To book interviews with experts, call the contacts.

McKesson Water Products processes and distributes nearly 750,000 gallons of pure drinking water daily under the well-known brand names of Sparkletts in Southern California, Nevada, Washington and Texas; Alhambra in Northern California; and Crystal in Arizona. Access its Web site at mwpc.com .
