just In: KKK Grand Wizard Running For U.S. Senate July 22, 2016
The founder and former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke, has announced that he is running once again for public office. Emboldened by Donald Trump’s implicit courting of white supremacy and his elevation of the so called “alt-right” into mainstream politics, Duke is running for the Senate in Louisiana once again, hoping to fill the seat vacated by disgraced Republican Sen. David Vitter.
Complaining about all the “special interest groups” advocating for the rights of African-Americans and Jewish-Americans, Duke promises to stand up for the “rights” and “heritage” of “European Americans” (read: white). He calls for an end to the “mass of immigration” that is “cleansing” (read: white genocide!) the people whose forefathers committed genocide against the natives created America. “I am overjoyed to see Donald Trump and most Americans embrace most of the issues I’ve championed for years” said Duke, who recently blamed “Jewish sabotage” for Melania Trump’s plagiarism scandal.
This is, of course, not the first time Duke has run for office. Duke ran for president in 1988, for Senate in 1990, and for Governor of Louisiana in 1991, for President in 1992, for Senate in 1996, and for the House in 1999 – all defeats. Duke was somehow elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives for one term in 1989. Duke is also a felon, having been convicted of defrauding his supporters, taking their donations and using them for recreational gambling. Which puts him on pretty level ground with his inspiration and hero, Donald J. Trump.
Duke has been already disavowed by the Louisiana Republican Party, however. It’s hard to see how a man who once attended a Holocaust denial conference hosted by then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad could reasonably get enough support to be elected, but in this perverse political climate that just saw a silver-spoon fed atheist oligarch masquerade as a blue-collar populist evangelical to steal the Republican nomination, it seems like anything is possible.
