Comline Electronics Wire via Individual Inc. -- The Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) and SEMI have released statistics showing that worldwide sales of semiconductor reached US$3,094,000,000 in October, 1997, up 72.8% from October, 1996. This is the fifth consecutive month showing an increase. Areas including the United States and Taiwan more than doubled sales and Korea showed an 80% increase. Japan had a 32.1% rise, the second consecutive monthly increase. Europe had a 32.9% rise. Investment in semiconductors was up by 103% in the North American market and by 124.7% in the Asian market including Taiwan. By sector, wafer processing equipment was up 78%, assembly equipment was up 69.5% and test equipment was up 65.9%. Investments in wafer manufacturing equipment was down 22.6%, due to the shift to 300 mm wafers. _____________________________________________________________________
