Todays Democrats show no sign of supporting monarchies. Which would have been a requirement at the founding of the Republic. I grant you they would have wanted to go slow, they seem to have lost their taste for revolutionary change.

But the current Republican party has thrown their weight behind someone who promises to be a strongman. A central figure that runs government by his own lights, not bothering with things like the rule of law. Who controls the military and police the same way.

In other words, a monarch.
