They are very upfront about it. I read Dalio's "manifesto" before my first interview. He makes it clear that everything is recorded, video taped, and scrutinized to find better ways of running the shop. They also give you deep psych assessments (plural) to see what you are made of and where you fit in the team. And to their credit, they share the results with you. All this before or during your first interview. Oh, and they rent you a hotel near the office because your interview may take more than a full day. Nobody who goes through the process thinks this is a typical office environment. Anyone who can't stomach such an environment, should not apply, or accept the job offer. I didn't think anyone was scared. It was more like working for NSA; you followed protocol and stayed very professional and on top of your game at all times because that was part of the job and if you didn't you'd be fired. I don't consider this a culture of fear any more than working in any other high pressure, high impact organization (like some 3-letter agencies) has a culture of fear. Overall, I preferred Bridgewater to D.E. Shaw's which is another super-secret hedge fund (are there other kinds? Not in the top tier, as far as I know).

PS At one point in time, more than 1 out of every 5 trades in NYSE was conducted by D.E. Shaw. The wrong person doing the wrong thing could literally crash the global markets and destroy hundreds of billions of dollars. Does anyone really think workers in these companies get the same training and levels of scrutiny than the average office?
