Many countries seem to do fine with parliamentary systems. It would require major constitutional surgery here, though, which makes it a total non-starter. I like the California primary system, where everybody is in the same primary and the top 2 vote getters go to the general, regardless of party affiliation, as a nice small step in that direction. At least I think that's the way it works.

There used to be a lot more open primaries, I think. The parties are against them, but Wisconsin has long fought to keep ours open.
