I enjoy watching a stock like IOM close on days like today. There was a tight spread with big, fairly well matched sizes on the bid and ask. Then when 4 pm rolled around, they disappeared without any significant trading, and the spread widened. It's like two armies batlling it out in the trenches 100 yards apart. Then, by gentleman's agreement, they call it quits at tea time, and both retreat to the safety of the barricades 300 yards back.

One explanation is that they are day limit orders expiring unfilled, leaving the GTC orders to do guard duty over night. I suppose this is why many people say not to assign any importance to the phenomenon.
