Silicon Rival Stalks Apple, Google, Tesla-Facing Chip Markets

Silicon Valley's namesake raw material faces a promising new rival: gallium nitride (GaN). Some say the newcomer is poised to swarm the $30 billion semiconductor power supply market. It's a market that involves "anything that plugs into a wall" ranging from Apple( AAPL) iPhone chargers to Tesla Motors' ( TSLA) luxury electric cars.

Chips using layers of GaN have the potential to be 10 times more efficient than their silicon peers. They can be made much smaller/lighter. And they are less expensive to produce than previous designs using gallium arsenide (GaAs), says Efficient Power Conversion CEO Alex Lidow. EPC has worked in GaN for over six years.

Last year, GaN surpassed a vital production hurdle, Lidow told IBD. It's now less costly to make than silicon. He likened the juncture to the shift made by aluminum vs. steel when Ford ( F) introduced aluminum body panels in its 2015 F-150. Aluminum is lighter, which makes vehicles more fuel efficient. But steel remains the metal du jour in cars and trucks because it's less expensive.
