8/5/16 Contest update
Inspired by the latest polls, here’s my paraphrase of the week: “You will have so much schadenfreude that you may get bored with the schadenfreude," he said. "Believe me, I agree, you'll never get bored with schadenfreude.”
Meanwhile, biotechs had a decent week. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -20.31% YTD (vs. down -24.28% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -12.12% YTD (vs. down -14.46% YTD a week ago), while the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -8.64% YTD (vs. down -11.62% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 4.27% YTD (vs. up 3.09% YTD a week ago).
DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 18.03% YTD, had a stellar week and remained our leader. MASTER’s portfolio, up 12.08% YTD, held on to second place and JBOG’s portfolio, up 7.25% YTD, moved into third place.
At Friday’s close, 6 of the 58 Contest portfolios were in the green, but just 14 were beating the NBI and a mere 10 were beating the SPSIBI. The 223 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -15.84% and a median YTD loss of -21.43%, with 58 of the 223 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments:
1) CERE buyout for $.40 per share by Land O’Lakes. I used 7/29/16 closing prices when reallocating cash. CERE was only held in DEWDIL’s portfolio.
2) BIND buyout by Pfizer. I’ll wait a bit to reallocate cash as exact per share payment not yet set. BIND was held in two portfolios, DLU & PGO.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Have a terrific summer weekend biotechies.
Peace & good health,
Bulba
