AAPL purchased back a lot of stock since 2013. Since they had to pay more than book value for the shares, their book value has sort of held steady (as has their cash on hand). Book value is a useful metric for banks and insurance companies, but rarely so for industrials or any producer of goods. Below is a link to a study why book value does not work as well as it used to, with stock purchases being one of the suspected root causes:
