Romney featured the Debt Clock at his convention right above center stage. Nobody of consequence is willing to tackle the issue.

Obama, shirt sleeves rolled up and microphone in hand berated GWB for running it up like a kid with a stolen credit card.... And then proceeded to make W look like pee wee herman and doubled it after the campaigning was done.

If I were Trump I would promise to task Buffet and the heads of the major banks in charge of the national debt and task them creating an investment fund to reduce it over a given period of time. Then change the budgeting process.
