Clark,

There's probably a stronger case against Intel than MSFT. Price reductions are not based upon costs or margins but rather market share losses. Physical architectural changes in Pentium II were to stifle competition not to add functionality, quality, flexibility or reduce cost. (See, I can convict a company without a trial too.)

By the way, I'm all for maximizing competition. I just don't believe that excessive government intervention is the means to that end. I do believe that the potential for abuse by government is very real, frequently demonstrated and causes more harm to free and full competition than Microsoft, for example, ever will.

If you find it impossible to agree with any of this, I won't suggest that you go "... live in a communist state or Korea where there is no attempt to maximize competition. ...". In fact, you're quite free to live where you choose, earn a living however you choose (unless prohibited by law), and believe whatever you choose to believe. That's a freedom that we should all value. It doesn't take too large a logical leap to believe that a government which takes these freedoms from companies will soon also take those same freedoms from individuals.

I further believe that it behooves all of us to value the freedoms that we still have while we have them. ... and to jealously protect them. FWIW.

Ian.
